Search Engine Optimisation is the process of configuring a website so that it falls in line with the processes used by search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Bing.

If done correctly, it can provide a valuable source of targeted traffic to your website 24 hours a day.

Marketing has evolved, why? Because people are evolving. They are changing the way they find what they need and they have endless amounts of tools to do it.

20 years ago (maybe even 10) if someone needed a plumber, they would go to the Yellow pages or the local business directory. They now go online. If you needed a cordless phone twenty years ago, the expert at in the high street would be your man. People now go online for thier cordless phones, that is if people still use them.

People use the web because it can tell you absolutely everything you need to know about a product before you buy it. Want to compare price? Done it in a second. Need some product reviews? How long have you got? We have thousands of them…

People are booking tables in restaurants through Apps on their phone – whilst crammed into a commuter train. People are looking for babysitters on a search engine, gyms on their iPad…the game has changed.

You must switch your focus from “Hey you, come into my shop and buy all this cool stuff” to, “How can we get in front of this punter when he needs us most?”

SEO plays an important role in this and can position you right in front of your customers when they need you most.

Here we are – the final day of my 5-day diary! I love Fridays!

This week has been pretty productive. We’ve completed another 5 major projects, and taken on a further 20 (which will all be complete in around 8 months’ time – obviously, the smaller ones will be done very soon!).

I have actually quite enjoyed my blogging experience – despite my lack of experience. But it’s obvious to me that blogging isn’t quite my cup of tea! I think I’ll stick to what I’m good at, and what I prefer – web design.

I’m in a meeting for most of today (in Cardiff with the guys from Creating Media), so my schedule isn’t one of designing web pages, it’s more of listening to corporate strategies and feeding the information back to my ever-growing team (which, by the way, is still expanding! We have just arranged another 5 interviews for over the next few weeks, and we are hoping to take on another 3 web designers… experienced ones, though, rather than trainees).

Everyone in my department works their socks off, and the success of GPUPower wouldn’t be as great without them – so I’d like to take my final space of my 5-day diary to thank my team members for their hard work, professionalism and dedication. We wouldn’t be where we are without you!

Day four of my 5-day diary… I can’t believe how fast this week has gone!

The meetings with our customers went better than expected. In fact, the guys actually brought us gifts to say thank you! I don’t have too much to share with you today, because I’ll be incorporating these testimonials into our portfolio (which we send out to new customers).

So, because I’m a bit short of things to say, here’s what one of our customers had to say yesterday:

“GPUPower, you have turned my company around. I hadn’t posted a profit for 5 months, and I was beginning to worry about the future of my business. So, I contacted you and you re-assured me that my business would be fine… I was just going after the wrong keywords and my website wasn’t geared up to convert.

“You took it from here on really, and apart from checking if I was happy with some big changes to the design/content, you just got on with it as you said you would. It took you just 2 months to have everything done – which was quicker than you had originally quoted.

“Of course, my business continued to post a loss for a few weeks after the changes, but over time, money really started to come back into my wallet – and it’s all down to you.

“GPUPower, thank you. Thank you for saving my business and pointing me in the right direction to success.”

Day three of my 5-day diary… I feel like I’m creating some sort of space log! Blogging like this is weird for me, but I know so many people out there blog every single day – I think it will take me a little bit longer to get used to!

Customer feedback is very important to us here at GPUPower, and today I am working on getting some testimonials for our sites. I have arranged meetings with four of the companies we have worked with (on both the design side of things and SEO) to talk to them about how they found our services.

I’m not making this up, but none of our customers have been dissatisfied with the service we have provided for them – which is great! It might have something to do with the fact that we actually care what we are doing, we put our hearts into every project, and don’t just do it for the money. We put ourselves in our customers’ shoes and ask ourselves what would the customer expect from us.

I’m off to these meetings now, and I’m certain they will go well. I’ve even lined up a few corporate gifts for the people I’m meeting just to say thank you – firstly for choosing GPUPower, and secondly for accepting my meeting request.

Hey, it’s Hannah again – and this is day two of my 5-day web design diary!

Wow, yesterday was hectic – but it was so exciting! I love getting new projects to work on, it really keeps everything so fresh. Today is a little bit more relaxed, as we are all settling into our projects and getting these sites looking good!

I’m really excited about one project in particular – and that is a gambling website. It’s for a well-known company (I won’t name any names), but I’ve got some great interactive ideas for the site that I can’t wait to try out!

In the meantime, though, I’ve got to induct the new-starters. They need their training materials, and they need experience, and I’m going to give it all to them.

I’m going to set them on our one-day projects for now, just until they pick up speed using the software. But once they know what they’re doing, they’ll be brought onto our main sites to work on our biggest projects – this should allow us to considerable up the number of projects we are working on – how exciting!

Hi there, I’m Hannah – and I’m GPUPower’s Senior Web Designer, and this is my 5-day diary.

Here goes day one (I warn you now, I’m not very good at the whole ‘blogging’ kind of thing!).

I’m a little bit busy at the moment with a recent ‘explosion’ in new projects – but I will get down what I can every day this week!

Here’s how the situation stands at the minute… We’ve just brought on board an additional 6 trainee web designers (yes… 6!) – and that’s quite scary really. We’ve gone from 2 web designers to 8 web designers in a matter of weeks. Things are really shaping up!

We’ve currently got 14 ongoing projects, 2 completed projects and 10 brand new projects. When I say projects – I mean entire site designs. We don’t class single page/sales letter designs as projects because they can be done very quickly while still maintaining a high standard.

The new projects we have all need analysing – and that’s my task… it’s what I’ll be doing all this week. Yeah, it can get a little tedious, but every project is different, and when you’ve got a mind as creative as mine… well – you can run rings around your competition!

Well, here it is, the end of the week. This is the final day of my 5-day diary.

I’ve said it before this week, but we’ve been extra busy. Not only have we taken on loads more projects, but we’ve also successfully completed 10 projects – getting our customers’ websites up to the top of the search engines for their main term.

It gives the entire team a great satisfied feeling when this happens, because everyone will have worked on a site to help it get up to the top. It’s this ethic and our hard-working team that makes our service such a success.

Because we’ve completed so many projects at the same time, I’ve decided to take the team out for a meal tonight to celebrate. Not only this, but it will help to keep the team’s morale high – which is crucial when it comes to getting our customer’s sites where they deserve to be. In my opinion, a happy team on our side of things leads to the success of our customers.

Well, I best crack on with the rest of today’s work load (which basically involves training our new starters up and getting them familiarised with the business. I can’t believe we’ve got 22 members of staff on board! It’s incredible how fast you can grow when your customers trust you.

These weeks just go too quickly – it’s day 4 of my 5-day diary already. A lot has happened this week. We’re usually busy, but this week we’ve got a massive volume of new work coming through.

Let me quickly explain our work process/production line (if you will) to you.

First of all, the trainee SEO Developers receive the new projects, and they are in charge of making sure all links to the sites are clean and spam-free (a little secret there for you!). Once these guys have done their job, the sites are passed on to the intermediate SEO Developers (and a new batch of sites is given to the trainees). The intermediates will then begin outsourcing tasks regarding the sites until there is a positive change in the rankings. They will then pass these sites on to people like me, the senior SEO Developers (and more sites will be passed from the trainees to the intermediates). It is then down to me and my immediate colleagues to follow the sites through to their resting place – number one. This can take up to 6 months (and sometimes more) – it just depends on the keyword that is being targeted.

Basically, today is the day we start physically working on improving the rankings of these sites. There are various methods to do this, and they all have varying success rates – so it’s a case of knowing what do to with certain niches!

Paul here, again! It’s day 3, and this is where the bulk of our work comes in. The theatre was great last night – for those of you who are interested… by the way!

This morning we’ve received responses from all the companies we sent reports to – now it’s time to got through them to see who we have on board!

I’m doing this as I write, so I apologise if I sound a bit disjointed! So far, out of the 22 companies we contacted, 19 of them are on board.

I’ve just finished going through all of the companies, and 21 out of 22 of the companies we got back to are happy for us to go ahead – and if that’s not a good enough reason to use our services… I don’t know what is!

It is now my job to delegate work to my team. I have 7 SEO staff working with me here at GPUPower – and all of them are eager to get their hands on these sites.

Each member of staff, will (after my calculations), take 3 sites each – some will take a few more, but only those that can manage them.

Their job will be to get these sites to number one (or as close to as possible) within the 4 month period. This will involve a lot of outsourcing so we can get thousands of natural article links live all over the web.

So – it’s off to the project distribution meeting for me! See you all tomorrow.

Hi, it’s Paul again, and this is day two of my 5-day diary, and things are really picking up this week.

We contacted the remaining companies who sent us requests, and are now in the process of putting together plans for all of these companies based on their requirements.

This is a simple process, and it involves looking at the site the company already has (if they do have one), sifting through their back links to determine which ones may be holding them back, putting together a content-plan for them… and so on (we won’t go into our secrets too much!).

You might be thinking with 30 new companies under our wings we’ll be thinking ‘kerching!’ – but you’d be wrong. We charge our customers very reasonable rates and don’t work just for profit. We want to see success. And as our business motto goes… your success leads to our success.

I’m only on a half day today, because me and my wife are off to watch a play this evening – something to help us both relax – so this is pretty much all I’m going to be doing this morning.

Once the reports have been put together, we’ll send them off to the companies for them to review and decide if they want to go ahead with our services.
